In the run-up to our client-focused Rocket conference we have been talking to our digital-specialist speakers to find out who they are and what they think. 

Who are you?

Hi, I’m Richard. I’m the Senior User Experience Lead at Zengenti, working alongside the product team.

My love for the web stems from the early days of AOL and CompuServe; I still reminisce when I hear the dial-up modem tones, and remembering I was only allowed to use the Internet after 6:00pm, when it was cheaper; those were the days.  

I started designing interfaces for internal applications whilst working as a server engineer, first using table based layouts, and then in HTML/CSS during the era of Web Standards and the still active CSS Zen Garden. I also dabbled around in some Flash & ActionScript – after all, who didn't want a cool animated banner on their website?

I’ve always had an appreciation for good design, and as a keen amateur photographer I was as happy in Photoshop at this as I was in a code editor. It was seeing the designs in the Zen Garden that made me delve in to the principles of graphic design and I spent more time in Photoshop honing those skills.

I worked for a short time as a graphic designer, predominantly designing for print with the occasional interactive installations. But the dynamism of the web has seen me fill roles as UI designer, front-end developer and now as the senior UX lead at Zengenti.

What do you do?

As a UX designer my wings are spread fairly wide at Zengenti. I’m largely involved with the ongoing feature development and refinements in Contensis. That can encompass anything from reviewing user journeys, adjusting micro copy, drawing up user stories, and prototyping new features.

I’m actively involved with the front end development of Contensis, developing a living style guide of our common design patterns, and working alongside our team of developers to design develop and tweak the interface of Contensis.

What is your prediction for our digital future?

I’m not sure we’ll ever meet the futuristic utopia that we saw in The Jetsons of the '60s but I do think digital and technology will continue to become more prevalent in our lives. I don’t really have any predictions but I am excited in what technology and digital has to offer – whether thats advances in medicine through things like Research Kit, our roads changing as we see cars relying on digital such as those from Tesla or completely autonomous cars like the one from Google, 3D printing aiding prosthetic limbs, or how personal tech like the Apple Watch will affect our lives.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I’m fortunate to work remotely, and live in Wales. This provides an excellent backdrop of mountains to climb, places to walk and great locations to photograph. When I’m not out walking or snapping away, I’ll happily hang out in a local coffee shop for the afternoon enjoying a flat white while keeping up on industry news and best practice.
